January 2021 Newsletter
All These Worlds Are Stages
Welcome to 2021!
On New Year’s Eve, some folks reflect on the passed year, while others consider the year to come. Some of us even do both. No matter which way you go, this is a worthwhile exercise, with one…oh, let’s call it a flaw. I’ll explain.
Until/unless we develop time travel, the past has been writ. It’s done. It’s etched in carbonite. Won’t change, however much we might wish it to. The past is, nonetheless, a reservoir of lessons which, if they are not to be repeated, are to be heeded. If mistakes are to be made in 2021, let us try to make all new ones.
Until/unless we develop time travel, the future ain’t been writ yet. It’s etched in room-temperature helium. A puff of air from our mouths, and it’s gone. Poof! To be given substance, the future must be brought into the present moment. Constantly. One may say the past is prologue, and that could very well be true. But not necessarily. Thus the aforementioned flaw.
Each individual among you is in total control of what happens next. Control of your present. Control, thereby, of your future. You’re all aware of this. What, after all, is a New Year’s Resolution but an attempt to change the road you’re on, a statement of doing It differently in some way this time around? You know what you’ve gotta do. Do it. Don’t let you be stopped by yourself. You control this moment. And the next. And the next…
Retreat from Life is not an option. Take a step into 2021. And another. And another…
So: one step at a time, here we go.
SPECIAL PROMOTION: BUY THREE, GET ONE FREE
It’s just what it says. Buy any three books from our Shop, and get a fourth free. You have to use a special code, of course. It’s HOLIDAYS2020 and is good until January 16. One teensy proviso: the cover price of the free book cannot be more than the highest cover price of the other three books. See you in the Shop!
In addition to our regularly scheduled publications, we have some themed anthologies open. Potters Field #7; Drabbun; the current Drabble contest. Guidelines can be found on our home page, under (you guessed it!) Guidelines.
We’ll add specific guidelines in another month or two, but we are also currently open to submissions to a couple of other anthologies. One is Cosmic Crime Stories. We released such an anthology in 2020. We’re going to do it again. The other is Infradead: Tales of Human Extinction. You can pretty much figure out from the titles what sort of stories to write. Guidelines will pretty much follow those in Potters Field 7. So break out the legal pads and the No. 2s and the coffee, and get started. The submissions address is sdpshowcase at yahoo dot com.
IN OTHER NEWS…
Due to my recent move to the Southwest, I’ve fallen a bit behind in reading subs. I’m working on it; please bear with me a little longer. Ideally I want to cut the response time down to about a month.
