"While we didn't feel anything physically when they fed on us, our mental states were another matter.  Sometimes they'd feed on you just a little, leave you with a bit of depression, maybe a little sadness, or some anxiety.  Sometimes they'd feed too much, though this was less common.  Overfeeding led to hysteria, madness, and other mental ailments.  Sound people would snap overnight."
