Pyra, injured in a firefight, is taken to a hospital on Ceres, where she has to return to her parents, who still want to send her to Mars for school. With the help of her friends, she contrives to escape. But her friends have their own lives, and want to return to them. Alone now, Pyra goes back to Europa to help Doctor Mairead O’Rourke study the morrikaru—the telepathic blind seals that inhabit the oceans under the surface of the Jovian moon. But Pyra has to fight against loneliness, and as usual she spills into danger. This time, she might not escape, for there is no one now to help her.
